Unit 1 dev log 1 | 2/11/25

I had completely forgotten that I was supposed to be doing this blog post because I was so busy with this model but here are the things that have happened over the past couple of weeks as an update!

Week Commencing 13/10/25

Starting off this week, I was planning on getting the handle done, however I had noticed that the way that I had made the blade was very inconsistent and very hard to use because it was just one polygon so i scrapped it and re-did it, adding more edges and vertices so that I could manipulate it easier if it comes to it.

I have added more lines so that the blade will be more easily manipulated as well as used the knife tool to cut a hole into the blade just like in the original model.
I have also extruded the edge further out so that when it will come to texturing the model, I will be able to make separate textures between the edge of the blade and the side.

It was also during this week that I have created the additional smaller blade that the great sword has as an accessory as in a realistic fashion, a weapon like this wouldn’t have a smaller blade for use.

I also created the secondary, smaller blade that is at the bottom of the greatsword.

The edge was also extruded for when it will come to texturing that I will be able to add an additional edge texture.

For the hilt, I used a cylinder and an add-on for blender called Wrap Master that allows me to get bandages and wrapping to put around other objects, this add-on is extremely customisable allowing for several bands, loops and turns for the bandage as well as providing texturing immediately.
I have also included a pummel for the end of the hilt.

Week Commencing 20/10/25

I had planned to at least start the main leather body, but I instead went into the game for reserach and frame captured an attack from the weapon, putting the analysis of it into my portfolio and taking screenshots of the weapon for more 3D points of reference.
Having captured the screenshots I learnt that the face of the sword facing the player isnt fully flat and is instead ever so slightly curved.

This means that the shape of the blade generally looks more like this, instead of a flat face.

With this screenshot, I had also noticed that there was a secondary hilt as well as a piece of wood that seperates the two parts of the hilt, which lead me to duplicate the first piece of the hilt and scale it down on the z-axis to make it smaller in length.

Week Commencing 27/10/25

At the start of the week and the weekend before that, I ended up being very ill and ended up in bed for a lot of the first half of the week. This unfortunately meant that I couldnt work on my project and for other chances I would not be feeling in a good enough state to focus completely on the 3d model. I started working on it by the end of the week, having done a wrapping around the blade, similarily to the same wraps that I used on the hilts

It was at the end of this week which I decided to learn how to sculpt after decididing that I will probably be needing to know how to sculpt to add further detail to my 3D model, the results of which I have posted on a seperate blog, Click Here.
